This is a story about a member of my downline who dreamed of quitting his job and becoming his own boss. Like anybody who wants to works towards financial freedom and retiring early, he got caught up in the word of MLM with all of its promises of retiring early in 3-5 years and giving the average person the ability to earn residual and leveraged income without having to work a regular job. This is the day in the life of a typical MLM failure, and the goal is to teach newbies to the business exactly what traps and habits they should not to fall into and what they need to succeed.
Let me tell you about my team member John. He came to me motivated and ready to take action and was ready to conquer the world like all MLM newbies. His energy level was high and nothing would stop him from becoming a success and quitting his job. I really thought that John had what it takes to make it in this business and I was excited to have him on my team. To my disappointment, John never followed my advice and got lost in a cycle of never ending failure and pushed himself further into debt. Here is a day in the life of John and a lesson to teach newbies thinking about joining an MLM opportunity.
One day John wakes up and decides that he has had enough. He is sick of his boss and job and is in debt up to his knees. John turns on his computer and starts searching on Google for ways to make money online and stumbles upon one of my ads. He clicks on it and signs up for my mailing list and waits for my email. After receiving my email and checking out my opportunity John is fired up and has decided that he has had enough and this is it. This is his ticket to financial freedom. He has no worries anymore and has trouble sleeping that night thinking about the exciting opportunity ahead of him.
John gets home from work the next day and is ready to get started on his goal of making tons of money in MLM. The first thing he does is email me and ask me on how to get started and how to get sign ups. I respond to his email and introduce myself and send him links to my blog which has training material and instructions on using our marketing system. Without hesitation John visits the site and buys all the needed marketing tools like autoresponders, lead capture pages and all of the basic things you need to get started building a list and making money just like the pros do.
John is up all night setting up his website and following all the steps until he gets to actually advertising his website. Part of my system requires people to place solo ads in e-zines that cost money, some of which are expensive. John emails the next day and tells me about what he has done so far and asks what he should do next. I email John back and tell him about what I do to make money and get sign ups. I explain to him that you can either do free advertising using the methods on my blog or pay for advertising. I tell John about the importance of setting up ad tracking to minimize his losses and explain in detail the exact system I use to make money.
John then begins his search for the magic pill. He feels uncomfortable about spending money on advertising and starts looking for another way out. Believe it or not John will even to go on pay upwards of $100 to $200 for information on making money and marketing and not even think about spending the same amount on actually marketing his new business. He starts searching Google everyday on every possible way to get MLM sign ups and within months spends $500 on e-books, videos and software.
Everyday John comes home from work excited about the last book he bought and can't wait to come home to try out the methods to make money with that he learned, but John never actually tries it out. He says to himself he can't afford it, it won't work, or there has to be something easier to do.
I get another email from John and he explains his frustrations. By this point I know that John will already fail and I consider not helping him anymore, but I don't want to give up that easy so I try one more time to teach him the right way to market his business. It seems like it got through to him this time and he follows my advice. I tell him to start spending whatever you can afford on advertising and do as much free advertising as you can with the various methods I teach, and most of all track your results with an ad tracker.
John goes back to his computer and finally breaks down and buys his first ad. The funny thing is the ad cost $100, but he never spent the $50 to buy the ad tracking software which I told him would be the factor in him making money on paid advertising. I made it very clear to him he would never know if his ads made money or not without it.
A week goes by and John's ad absolutely fails, he barley gets any traffic and no leads. He starts searching for new ways to get people to visit his website and even spends another $100 on another e-book which promises to get 10,000 visitors in one month to his site. John is excited once again and can't wait to learn the new method. Johnny reads the new book only to be disappointed learning that he previously bought another book that teaches the same method but he never even tried it because it was too involved and complicated.
Feeling very depressed Johnny writes me a long email explaining that he did everything I told him and he can't get any sign ups and is thinking about quitting. He is very angry about spending $100 on an ad that did not make him money, yet he is not angry about the thousands he spent on information and software.
At this point I know that John is lost and will never make it. It might take him years to get it, but I know that there is no convincing John to stay. I wish him the best of luck and he goes on his way bitter about his experience with my company.
Fast forward one month...
John is on his favorite forum online talking about his really bad experience with my company and how he wasted a lot of money with no results. He reads the post of another member and clicks on his website. John is amazed at the presentation and is ready to sign up with the company thinking that this will be the one. he proceeds to sign up and email his new sponsor asking for help and telling him his story.
John's new sponsor gives him links to his website and tells him about his marketing system and shows him how he makes money and gets sign ups. Once again it involves spending money on advertising and tracking results and John is starting to get upset. He explains that he has spent money on ads in the past with no results and needs methods that are free.
John's new sponsor tells him some free methods and explains it works but takes longer. He goes home after work and starts to promote his new business using the free methods. The next day John checks his email and sees he got a sign up. He is so excited and can't believe it. He goes and spends the next few hours marketing his business using the same free methods. A week goes by but John gets no new sign ups.
He emails his sponsor and says, "I don't understand, I did what you told me to do and I am not getting any results. How do I get sign ups?" His sponsor replies, "Are you tracking your ads?, How do you know where your sign ups are coming from?" He then proceeds to layout a complete marketing plan step-by-step for John and even gives him ad copy that he use himself to get sign ups from his ads.
To make a long story short, John once again drops out and starts searching for the next big thing. The one opportunity that is going to make him rich with absolutely no work on his end. He is tired of spending money on ads, and he is sick of promoting with no results.
John once again joins another business opportunity and starts the whole entire cycle all over again. Overall John has spent about $3000 on books, videos, software and marketing systems. It has gotten to the point where he is currently spending $300 a month just on membership fees to MLM's he is involved with and is still not spending any money trying to promote them. John even spends $50 a month just to belong to a website that teaches people how to do Internet marketing, but he never follows through with any of the methods and winds up searching for something better.
So this is a day in the life of an MLM failure. Do you see the cycle? Are you starting to see the pattern of what you are doing wrong?
We will continue this story in the sequel to this article as we take a look into a day in the life of an MLM superstar and take a look at all of John's mistakes and correct what he did wrong. Just remember if you keep doing the same thing over and over and expect to see different results, you are going to be very disappointed and find yourself caught up in a cycle of failure again.
